Hello Everyone!
Hope you are all having a nice mid-semester break! I don't really know why Monash calls it a Mid-sem break...when really it's in week 9 and we come back for 3 weeks before SWOT Vac and EXAMS arghhh don't want to think about them!
I just came across an interesting article published in 'The Australian' - "Facebook 'ignored privacy flaw' on websites" by Chris Griffith. Apparently Facebook Cookies (files used to collect and record personal website browsing history) is kept active even after a user logs off their Facebook account. This means even when you have logged out of Facebook personal data and browser will be recorded by Facebook. This information could then be sold to Facebook 'customer's who use it to marketing and advertising purposes.
This is a clear breach of privacy and security! The reason why these cookies are turned off is to ensure spammers and phishers don't obtain confidential information from the user.
It also takes advantage of the trust users like myself have of Facebook. I am personally offended that Facebook has been recording and collecting data from me without notifying me...i think Facebook should at least notify users and give us a choice of whether they want to turn it on.
What do you think? Are you offended too?
See everyone Tuesday!
Guess enough people were offended:

I read somewhere the other day that the main reason people stop using social media sites is because of privacy concerns....Facebook hasn't won any prizes here. Although I kind of expected them to be mining all our info and doing something with the details that most people probably wouldn’t like...maybe I’m a cynic
Hi Daiz, I have to admit, doesn't really bother me. In a way, I know it will happen in some way or another, be it social media sites or online shopping sites. This is unfortunately the way things are these days I think. And, to be perfectly honest, at least this way I get targeted ads appearing on FB, rather than just some junk that means nothing to me.

This breaches the privacy and security issues. I think users should be notified the purpose of collecting information.
ReplyDeleteGoogle do exactly the same thing, why shouldn't Facebook? Do we trust Google more than Facebook?

Hi Daiz, I don't really care that Facebook use my information, I knew that It could happen since I subscribed to Facebook in 2007. We choose what information put on it, so, we know what we want to publish and what we don't. When I subscribe to a website, i think that always they can know all the information that I share...
ReplyDeleteI can see what you mean about the breach of security. It feels weird to think that info is continually being collected about you even though you aren't using their platform. What makes me uncomfortable is the elusiveness of it. We have to hear about cookies and privacy issues through The Australian or A Current Affair, not Facebook or Google themselves. I'm sure if I dug deep enough I would find a little cranny on their website explaining this, but as they aren't being open and upfront about their actions from the get go... that's what I don't think I like.
