I had trouble deciding what I wanted to write about this week ~ I had a few ideas but I thought this topic to be the most interesting hehe
When was the last time anyone used their home phone or landline?
Hahaha I ask this question because I used our home phone for the first time in months today...and the only reason why I used it was because my mobile was dead (forgot to charge it :P) and needed to call my sister and say happy birthday.
That's when I decided to do some research about home phone use, according to a survey conducted by Talk Talk (Telecommunication Company in the UK), "even though Facebook has not taken over the phone as people's primary mode of communication but still one fifth of those surveyed admitted to using Facebook to contact people".
Another fact was that mobile phones usage have overtaken landlines, approximately 40% of respondents preferred to make phone calls from their mobile phones while only 22% preferred to use the landlines.
Personally, since signing onto an unlimited mobile phone plan where i can make any national calls to landline and mobiles (regardless of network), send unlimited text messages and 5gb of internet data. I basically never have to use the home phone...and rather use my mobile...because I'm able to check my records and save the number into my phone as a contact :)
I think it makes sense because home phones are less entertaining and practical in comparison to mobile phones with the apps and other gaming functions.
This is why Telstra introduced the T-Hub which is the new generation home phone with a touch screen attached to allow customers to use social networking websites on the device.
I'm curious...what is your preferred device to connect with people? Do you think you will use the home phone more if you were able to access social networking websites?
Thanks for reading!
Interesting post. I don't even have a home phone, with a mobile on a cap plan I don't have need for a home phone. I actually can only think of one friend who has a fixed line and that is because they run a business from home. The proliferation of mobiles gives marketers a heap of creative and interactive ways to get to us....SMS, MMS, Bluethooth etc. much more interesting than the old phone call at dinner time from someone wanting us to buy something we don't need!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of this but never actually seen it. I don;t have a home phone, I am just hooked up to naked ADSL and prefer that. No random telemarketers calling when I'm eating. Would I use a T-Hub, no, that means I have to access my SM sites wherever my homophone is plugged in, and more, why would I pay an extra 20 bucks on top of my current internet plan to get just another type of phone that gives me unlimited calls. My mobile does all the above, for cheaper, and wherever I want it to do the above!

The only reason home phones are surviving is that the telco's offer "bundles" (i.e. cheaper internet) if you keep it connected. And don't get me started on the T-Hub - what a useless device! Slow, cumbersome, and a pathetic effort by Telstra to keep the home phone alive.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the comments!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everyone the homephone is quite useless now...i mean i never use it and when i use it...it's only because i have no choice ahhaha i don't even pick up the home phone any more because only telemarketers call...
As for the T-Hub I agree with Wags it's so useless i remember going into Telstra for an interview so i decided to go check out their products at a T-bar and the sales person was raving on about the T-hub and how it's the next 'new' in thing...
I wonder when everyone will get rid of their homephones and eventually just use their mobiles or VOIP :)
